Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! – Season 4

3 out of 5

Director: Tim and Eric kiddles

The issue with season 4 of the continuing weirdness of Tim & Eric is that you now know what to expect. The duo have been plying this type of comedy for years, but somehow knew how to keep it continually random. It carries that same sensibility, but now with a kind of acceptance. Right off the bat, we dip into season 2’s mentality of give the people what they want – repeated characters, repeated jokes. Its not a bad thing, and kind of sweet in an oddball way.  But it’s the first season with a sigh of familiarity to it, lacking the cold ‘what’s next’ surprise of season 3 or even the confidence of season 2.  However, about halfway through, the duo delivers a few episodes along the lines of the Jim & Derrick ep, where they commit to a gag for the whole show.  Some of these works better than others – the Cinco episode is hilarious, vs. the Tommy Wiseau ep which is notable for its involvement in bringing ‘The Room’ to the masses but sorta falls flat for a gag – but it’s another step in the direction they were going toward film and commercials, and a nice development on the randomness / uncomfortable humor that had become their stock in trade.  All of this, by no means, means that the show is going to play to wide audiences anytime soon. It is still stupid, bizarre, and at times, genius. But for season 4, instead of watching with this kind of ‘what the hell’ laughter, on the verge of fear, now you’re actually laughing ’cause you get the joke.

The extras are the same package that came with seasons 2 and 3 – deleted, extended, Awesomecon stuff.
