The Amazing World of Gumball: The Mystery (Volume 2 DVD)

4 out of 5

As this is the next chunk of season 1 episodes (volume 3 completes it), the exact same commentary from Volume 1 would apply: no HD, extras limited to some character summary text pages, but a great gaggle of episodes.  As noted in the other review, though the intro titles appear before each episode, chapter skips are handily placed before and after each episode itself (that is – after the titles and before the credits), so that’s handy.  Something I didn’t mention before, though, and just sort of underlining the budget presentation here, is that the music starts over on each menu screen for the DVD.  This might be a limitation to the technology, but I’m pretty sure I’ve had some discs that play the loop while you’re navigating through, so it must be something about how the pages are stored.  Anyhow, it’s annoying when you’re flipping through episodes or the bios and the music keeps restarting.  Wah wah, etc.

Amazing episodes that continue to break my mind – The Mystery, The Sock, The Dress – especially – are so in left field it’s insane that people still care about other shows.  Some episodes do show the wear and tear of making something for kids – like The Club, or The Pressure – but that’s not really a knock, I just mean they stick more or less to the hi-jinks course.  (While still being awesome.)

Cartoon Network lords: just make the complete season blu rays available as made-to-order.  I will rebuy these in HD.
