Squidbillies – Volume 3

3 out of 5

Director: Adult Swims

Ah, Squidbillies. When Aqua Teen started to flounder a bit a few seasons ago, creators Matt Malleiro and Dave Willis started branching out to other projects. Mr. Willis lent his hand to this amazing gem, the first season of which combined all the right randomness from Aqua Teen with a bizarre sense of purpose and direction. It was still crazy, but seemed rooted to some type of weird, drunken, backwoods reality. The crude drawing style is probably a required taste, but every Adult Swim show comes with its own unique presentation. As long as its consistent and colorful, generally your eyes get used to it. It helped that the insane logic of Squidbillies was matched by its hazily comfortable drawing style. …But, as happens with many of these shows, eventually it drifts away from what made it great. Vol. 3 has several excellent episodes, more toward the end of the disc, but first half is marred by a sense of wandering that the show had previously avoided. The writers seemed to go a tad more topical with their themes, and it enters into the shoulder-shrugging territory that occurs when you find yourself without any clue what to say or write. Its still Squidbillies, but its getting a little tired (…around when Aqua Teen started to get better…).
