covers season 1
After kicking around somewhat under-utilized in various projects (of lesser or greater titterability degree), Andrea Savage deservedly nets her own show, a loosely autobiographical (think Louie) comedy series about comedy-person and family-person Andrea, who exists in a desirable state of permanent child-like glee, leading to hilariously bizarre conversation threads that are happily supported by her laid back husband (Tom Everett Scott) and comedy-people / family-people friends. Occasionally her dogged pursuit of a joke – and assumption that people get when she’s joking – lands her in hot water, but instead of just holding on the cringe humor aspect of such situations, I’m Sorry will generally find Andrea laughing her way back to safety.
While her rants and somewhat anti-social demeanor suggest cynicism, this inherent positivity is what ends up making I’m sorry stand apart from similar shows: Savage is actually a cool person with a cool kid and cool husband, and so the humor doesn’t waste time on pretending that life is horrible. People get her, and laugh at her jokes (except when they don’t…), and we get to share in her crass but caring exuberance.
Things are pretty simple on i’m sorry – plots don’t much carry over – but it still feels rewarding getting to know this small network of snarky, smart people, as they come across as incredibly real, and flawed, and exactly the goddamn type of people you wish you could pal around with.
