‘Dice’ is pretty much exactly what you’d expect in this modern age of ‘aware’ television: lead and star Andrew Dice Clay pokes fun at both his stage presence (the crass comedian) and his status as something of a relic in a fictional representation of his current life in Las Vegas with live-in girlfriend Carmen (Natasha Leggero) and hanger-on Milkshake (Kevin Corrigan). It’s amusing, and Clay is really willing to com across as a bum: a bad friend, a bad boyfriend, a bad back that acts up whenever he’s trying to lay a beat down on somebody, and a questionable wardrobe that makes him look like he’s never quite grown up. But by the same token, the show is definitely aiming for easy comedy and not depth; it doesn’t scratch too far below the surface of the ADC performer / person dichotomy, and episodes wrap up with thumbs up and smiles.
Which is fine for what it is. The writers smartly accept that Dice’s foul mouth shouldn’t be the sole source of comedy, and come up with acceptably chuckly situations to fill in the space. An acceptable time-waster, made fun by its charismatic cast.
