Aqua Teen Hunger Force – Volume 2

4 out of 5

Director: ATHF forever

And here we began to approach genius. Aqua Teen Hunger force built a nice little army of followers and was a big help in putting Adult Swim on the map. ATHF followers seemingly split into two camps as the show went on – those who preferred the encroaching randomness of everything, and those who preferred the slight structure that was established when the show began. For the latter camp, season 2 is probably the best, as it gets far enough away from the detectives premise of season 1 to start getting even weirder with the already weird plots, but has enough grounding to at least give a general start and finish to each episode. The concept was also becoming more fully realized, as seen by the more playful box art and menu layout and introductions. Personally, Im of the random camp who found the evolution of the show ever more genius as it went on (until a post-movie slump, but thats a different story), and so while you have some unbelievably so effing awesomely random stories here – Universal Remonster, Super Bowl, and Cybernetic Ghost just being some highlights – they still hover in a slightly structured world that keeps them from feeling completely unhinged. If this is your first exposure to the show, though, and you enjoy the humor, it will be amazing, as I only see the limitations in retrospect. A big plus to Vol.2 are a couple of the extras – ATHF original Baffler Meal appearance on Space Ghost and a funny short film called Future Wolf II.
