Spike and Mike’s Sick & Twisted Festival of Animation: Full Frontal

3 out of 5

Director: Various cartoon nincompoops

Each piece considered individually, this is actually a better overall collected than most S&M DVDs, but watched from start to finish, it falls to the same problems as most compendiums – the more boring pieces stall the whole show, and out of 30 shorts, the last 7 or so (post Hertzfeldt’s classic “Rejected,” which admittedly raises the bar) fall fairly flat, washing away most good memories you have of the previous entries and ending things on a sour note.  Also, there is the somewhat misleading bill of this being “Adults Only.”  While there is a slant toward more scatalogical humor on this collection, there are a few bits that feel included just as filler, and could (and have) popped up on other Spike & Mike / animated shorts DVDs.  As another reviewer notes, be prepared for filling like this is something a friend burned for you – half the shorts appear ripped right from a computer source and have copyright information embossed over it, always flattering.  But these are nits with the packaging.  This is about 2/3rds solid stuff, re-watchable, and on occasion stuff to show others.  But it still can’t help but make you impatient when trying to go through it all in one sitting.
