Visions of Suffering

Director: Andrey Iskanov

Yeah, thats fine, youre experimental. Im even okay with the low budget computer effects, because theyre sort of applied in an obvious way thats not trying to be anything except for trippy or distorting (…the fake rain does not fall into this category. That was meant to look like rain and there was no reason for it to be fake. You couldnt hook up something with a hose for a few minutes…?). And the lack of narrative… well, okay, its called Visions of Suffering and it seems to be that, initially, floating between dreams of various characters. It is when director Iskanov starts weaving in some loose and pointless connecting story about vampires that it loses coherence… and then the fact that it turns into a damned rave video for at least forty minutes. The shooting style was Tetsuo-esque (that really cheap, super close up shuddering between frenetic and stagnant shooting) but where that movie at least maintained a vibe, the fetishy shots and gore splashed in Visions amount to nothing thanks to the lack of any care for the audience. Completely non-impactful. If you want surreal, theres much better out there.
