Otto; or, Up With Dead People

Director: Bruce LaBruce

New to Bruce LaBruce, Otto still ended up being exactly what I expected… a sloppy, underground-feeling movie that overtly wends in themes of homosexuality and oppression and etc. etc. Which is what it is, and 30 minutes into the movie I was dreading having to sit through the rest, as wandering plot-lines inevitably stitch together and long shots of nothing happening. However… as the movie went on, and yes, this takes a while, but as the movie went on and as I stopped to read some things about Mr. LaBruce, I started to get it a little bit. Its still not fantastic, and that initial boredom doesnt get redeemed, but Otto has thought, chops, and commentary behind it, wrapped up in this silly bundle of talent and purposeful independence, gay and social commentary, etc. At first it seems unbelievably conscious of itself, and then it comes across as being a front for making the movie more enjoyable as commentary, or smut, or comedy, or whatever. I wont be suggesting it or watching it again any time soon, but it gives me respect for a genre that LaBruce maybe created (not that I can name that genre) and goes to show that talent can be purposefully applied in a sloppy way… for better or worse. Not a helpful review? I know. Beep.
