Director: Nash Edgerton
In his short ‘Spider,’ you sorta’ know something’s going to come smack you in the face at some point, but it still carries a fucka’ punch when it does. ‘Lucky’ isn’t so much about the shock as it is the goddamn awesomeness of the stuntwork captured here – a dude wakes up in the trunk of a speeding car and proceeds to break out and take control, all over the course of four minutes, all during continuous shots that swoop around the car to defy our guesses of how this can be faked. (Director and ‘star’ of this short, Nash, has done more stuntwork than films at this point, so its fun that he gets to combo those skills here.) It’s thrilling for sure, and is one of those concepts that you scribble down and then, probably, have to film, but the ‘punch’ at story’s end is a total shrug, totally expected, and stupid’s up the affair. It’s a lazy way out of a narrative-less gag, but thankfully it’s three seconds of the whole thing, and you’ll want to show your friends the flick anyway. (“Yeah, the ending’s stupid, BUT HOW DO YOU THINK THEY DID THAT” and etc.)
