Assassination of a High School President

Director: Brett Simon

Remember Brick? That murder mystery set in a high school that was amazing not only for its writing but its conviction in style? Yeah, this is the MTV version of that, which implies a lack of conviction. Assassination of a High School President (a misleading title in a sense, as things are never quite that serious) is about a fledgling newspaper writer (Reece Thompson) who breaks a big story about the High School President stealing the completed SAT tests. Unfortunately, he soon realizes hes got the wrong guy. Can he correct the story and save the then ex-president from a life of flunkitude? And at what cost? …Now firstly, Im being a bit unfair. MTV has put out some good films, and Brick isnt really a proper comparison as the movies are for different demographics. Whats upsetting, though, is how this movie cannot figure out how to present itself, unnecessarily quirkifying everything and twisting a plot that isnt too twisted to start with. You sort of feel sorry for the movie, because its ALMOST good, but seems scared to commit to being what it is. (maybe thats meta commentary on the high school experience?) Scenes are funny, but miss the mark (including the intended over-the-top character of the Principal, as played by Bruce Willis). The plot is doable, but over-dramatic. Teens might enjoy it, but the humor is too base for mature watchers. (Its unclear if this was intentional or not, as high schoolers do make that many wee-wee jokes.) And as a last gripe: the protagonist is too good looking to be the outcast he is. But whaddya want? Its MTV. Good intentions, I suppose, but all flash, no real substance.
