Not as funny or raunchy as I would’ve expected, Bridesmaids slots neatly into the Apatow world of “serious” comedies that are two hours long. First off – we’re misled. It’s not really about Bridesmaids, it’s about Kristen Wiig, whose relationships, job, and life are all going sort of wrong, and getting wronger as best friend Maya Rudolph appears to get swept away by a marriage (…to Tim Heideker… who has no lines…) and the wedding planner, Rose Byrne. Can the friendship be salvaged? Can Kristen get her life back in order? Well, yes. There are no surprises in films of this nature, they’re just meant to be more adult updates of crass college comedies now that those college kids are all grown up. It’s funny, it does it’s job. There were kudos from Ebert for having a strong female lead, but overall we still fall into reliable tropes of marriage and friendship and men and women. Nothing new here, but when you just want to be entertained for a couple hours that’s not a bad thing.
