Director: Frank Henenlotter
Bad Biology is all things exploitation, from the low budget production style (which unfortunately lent itself, in this instance, to pretty poor sound mastering, making the audio super quiet), to the complete okayness with nudity, to the frank and probably crass language and flat w/ flair acting style. It also mines the same weirdo humor / horror story lines as director Frank Henenlotters previous classics – Basket Case, Frankenhooker, etc. Which means, similarly, that we have an interesting story that is sort of clumsily wended between characters and an 85-minute movie: that a girl with 7 clitori who, by exploitation movie logic, has an addiction to orgasms that she equates to a true biological need. after a loose plot develops around her need, and how it ends up killing a lot of guys, and how her metabolic cycle is sped up and thus makes for super hunger post-sex and… mutant babies to pop out after a 2-hr birth cycle… we, and she, discover(s) a man with a gigantic dingle capable of providing an apparently daylong orgasm. Unfortunately, said dingle also has its own consciousness and maybe is dangerous. Will these two get together? Most of Henenlotters films have plots that sound similarly awesome / weird and yet end up turning out… not as awesome / weird on-screen. Which is part of the charm, in a way. Henenlotter has always aimed for exploitation, and exploitation is never particularly good, it just is what it is. Bad Biology certainly is exactly what it is. What IS new this time is a production partnership with R.A. the rugged man Thorburn, making Bad Biology much more hip-hopped up than previous films, and this seems to translate into a bit more awareness of an attempted beginning / middle / end (though the film is still incredibly beginning heavy) and plenty of super-underground hip-hop cameos. Is that a good thing? Bad thing? Its sort of a meh thing, but if it gets Henenlotter back out making movies, Im all for it.
