Ventura – Ananasses / Satananasses

4 out of 5

Label: Africantape

Produced by: Serge Morattel (recorded by)

The A-side of this is a solid rocker that’s very early 90s rock / grunge – carrying a definite bit of Pixies pop and crunch, forwarded along the feel good silly axis of groups like Presidents of the United States of America. I don’t know that it exactly sounds like Ventura from the time – 2013 – who tended to veer more towards noise rock, piling guitars and guitars with pummeling drums, but such a sidestep can also be exactly what 7″s or EPs are for, and the kind of plaintive vocals and general volume are not so out of line that someone picking this up as a fan would be at all disappointed.

The B-side is… Ananasses in reverse. It, eh, actually sounds pretty good, but not in any mind-blowing way that makes it more than a novelty. Still, I allot some ballsiness percentage to even doing that. (And the group apologizes for it anyway, printing “We are sorry” on the back cover.)
