Unknown – Unseen Series III

3 out of 5

Label: Analogical Force

Produced by: Carlos Koschitzky (mastered by)

As with the other Unseens, this “Unknown” is not the artist name, but rather stating their anonymity – the point here is for us to not know the artist.

I like the concept, even if it’s gimmicky, and seemed to be part of a trend when it kicked off, but the label has earned further favor from me by being reliable with the style of the their releases, and so I appreciate that they’re also sticking with this project, at least for now. However, the first two were very, very hit, and very miss for me – Unseen I was like a mic drop; Unseen II felt like a clearing house, releasing something that maybe they weren’t certain of as a “regular” release. Which I’m sure wasn’t the case, but it was just too Aphex IDM derivative for me.

Unseen III has its own vibe, thankfully, though it still hews a bit closer to II than I in the sense that it doesn’t sound as “deep” as many of AF’s stuff; more like a house playlist. The production is nice and meaty, and there’s some good interplay of percussion and samples, but it either reminds me of something very aggressive and static, like DJ Scud, or Cylob’s funkier stuff on closer ‘Functional;’ neither one of those modes get much replay value from me – especially Scud – but if you’re a breakbeat fan, perhaps this is more your speed. Either way, I can bob my head – I am not at all annoyed, as I was by Series II – but the 5-minute tracks are fairly unvaried after a few bars of beats and synths laying things down.

For my ears, more for dancing or workouts or something than a deep dive listen.
