Raise your hands if you were expecting the Klan to appear on a TMNTA cover. …Yeah, I didn’t think so.
I’m… surprised here, beyond that. There’s also some sexual innuendo here, and the general tone just goes further that Milton Knight’s previous goofiness into something that nabs from classic cartooning in ways charming – the canned dialogue – and nightmarish, via the outlandish expressions and anything-goes approach.
Whilst flying back (Cudley style) from some random “kickin’ adventure,” the boys’ space travels are interrupted by a congestion of bizarro space creatures, one of which slams into the cowlick and causes ejection of the TMNT to Dimension Grade A; specifically: Ms. Cleaver’s hideout. Y’see, the townfolk have chased her thereabouts due to the incurable ‘Monster Pox’ her son has contracted, causing him to sneeze out monsters. This is what causes some people to don white sheets and track down the monsters and their maker…
Illustrate this in the most insane style ever, with Knight stepping fully away from TMNT trappings (mutagen) and just going down his own road of antics for a most ridiculous, and wonderful, tale. It’s completely lacking in transitions – we just jut from one scene to another – but it’s all part of its full-steam-ahead style, and concludes with a rather hilarious happily-ever-after.
Yes, either colorist Barry Grossman or Knight seem to mix up Don and Raph, but, yeesh, the KKK are on the front of a kid’s book, so I’m not too concerned about character continuity.
The back few pages are a Ninjara ‘origin’ story by Mark Bode, which is also hilarious for being incredibly off – we already got Ninjara’s story and this ain’t it – but Bode has his own loose and goofy style, and Raph pops in to drop terms like ‘varmints’ and ‘my dove,’ so all’s well that ends well.
