Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures Special (#2, Fall 1992) – Stephen Sullivan

5 out of 5

Stephen Sullivan and Brian Thomas return for more environmentally-dusted TMNT adventures, loosely connected to Special #1 by way of our boys still being on vacation, joined by Archie artist Doug Crane in the book’s back half.

Both stories here have a fun bit of spring, with Thomas’ art on story one bringing a ton of animated life to Sullivan’s interestingly mature take on short-term vs. long-term profits via businesses vying for building space on the island of Kilaoto.  The TMNT – again, humorously not really stopping to jump out in front of crowds, which don’t react at all to their appearance – wrinkle their noses at the fire-spewing appearance of an island “god”, which warns against letting the more environmentally sound of the businesses winning the construction deal, but then they don’t wrinkle their noses at all at what turns out to be an even more ridiculous actuality.  These are prime hijinks, bright and bouncy and entertaining.

Next up, back home (I think), April sneaks the boys into a research lab on a Scooby Doo mission to expose a potential ghost.  Doug Crane goes full Archie with the illustrations and it’s pretty joyous, Sullivan again delivering a pretty wildly goofy script that nails its action and pun beats.
