3 out of 5
Label: Southern
Produced by: John Congleton
One original, two covers.
Title track What Big Teeth You Have is a Congleton snipe at consumerism and big business, told through fairy tale imagery and with the Hide the Kitchen Knives sound of restless beats and cutting guitars. It’s actually post that album, though, but still before the poppier emergings on Black Heart, giving the sound a slightly more accessible feel than the angry heft of Knives – it’s an excellent addition to the sorely missed Paper Chase’s backlog.
Jacque Brel cover My Death feels quite fitting for the band, and John’s topical predilections, and is given a fittingly moody working here, its melodies and explosiveness very much making it a PC track.
But: these two solid openers are very much countered by Roger Waters cover Go Fishing, which feels a bit too direct, lyrically, for the band, and sonically covers similar territory to My Death, only much less interestingly. It… doesn’t work, and rather kind of drags.
While 2 out of 3 ain’t bad, Go Fishing is such a non-starter in the band’s oeuvre that it drags the single down quite significantly.
