Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (#37, IDW) – Kevin Eastman, Bobby Curnow & Tom Waltz

3 out of 5

Something of a fill-in issue between the scattered bits of the last arc and, I presume, a mutant war to come.  Save two pages, the issue is all about bringing the Shredder / Krang conflict to the modern age, so this is a bit of story padding that was probably shuffled in-between arcs to line up timing of other resources.  The plotlines drifting as such, things read a bit sillier than usual, with a deal Shredder attempts to strike with Krang over protection for Burnow island not really making much sense and the fallout that occurs thereafter – a ‘contingency plan’ according to Shredder – making less sense, logistically. Cory Smith gets to draw some pretty exciting sequences, however, and Ronda Pattinson gets to enjoy coloring a daytime setting at sea, which gives the ish a nice, pleasant palette and tone that we haven’t got much of in the book.

#37 maintains the base quality of the IDW series but also shows off the pacing flaws its writing team often executes.  And by this point, we’re getting restless with setup, and gearing to go for some To Be Continueds that actually lead into the next book.
