The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Tails of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (#5) – Ryan North

Aright, guys, stop it.

Several civilians – including Squirrel Girl’s roommate, Nancy – find themselves sequestered in the Statue of Library due to a, uh, dinosaur scuffle.  They start bickering about which hero will come to save the day when Nancy proposes SG… which receives a lot of blank looks.  Then, suddenly, everyone remembers a story about Squirrel Girl, which are all mix-ups that just so happen to parody various events / artistic styles from Marvel history, or just skewer some comic tropes in general.  And it gives North and Erica Henderson a chance to make us laugh our poopers off.  Henderson again nails the comic timing but also shows herself quite capable of mimicking other styles – Romita, McFarlane – with funny nods to each, while still maintaining the consistency of her look, which helps this ish from falling off the rails to become simply a gag issue.  She and Rico Renzi also do a nice job of tweaking the colors where appropriate to match each tribute.  Ryan, meanwhile, slam dunks the timing of the jokes, drawing out each story long enough for a chuckle pay off and leaving room to cycle through a few bits without things feeling too clipped or too over-stuffed.  This issue was, again, a ton of fun, some ace creators getting out their giggles creatively but staying within the confines of the world they’re making.
