City of the Dead (Thrillbent digital story) – Karl Kesel & Ron Randall

4 out of 5

Nigh perfect example of the digital genre, only a little hampered by a sorta pointless two issue split.

SO – This is a fun, almost wordless zombie smasher thing, drafted by two veteran comic dudes who bring their own creations together for some bloody action.  Kesel’s Johnny Zombie and Randall’s Trekker team up inside of a prison to hunt down Trekker’s prey.  The art style looks more like Randall’s, which shows off his 2000 A.D. – honed light sci-fi look, but Kesel joins in with his polished cartoonish style for Zombie the character and, possibly, the zombies that the villain releases to attack the leads.  I’m not going to claim to know exactly who did what, but whats most important is that these dudes just got how to use the digital formats.  Their layouts are already dynamic and sweet, keeping exactly what’s needed in frame to show us the goods but also give us a sense of space and scope, and then they combine this with the slow reveal of digital page turning to properly ratchet up the thrills during the chase and battle.

The comic is seriously just a fight, but it’s paced perfectly to keep things fun for the two issues.  Although, as mentioned, that two issue split seems sort of arbitrary, and the strip is a little imbalanced by the opening pages which do have dialogue… leading us (me) to believe that they story might be capped with a similar conclusion, but instead it ends with a wink.  So it seems like the motivations that were expressed in that dialogue could’ve been done up wordless as well with little effort.  Not really sure as to why it was split up that way.

But blah blah who cares, right?  You?  Come on.  It’s free, it looks great, it reads easily, and it proves that digital can bring something extra to the medium.
