Aviatrix – Eric Haven

3 out of 5

Lord bless weirdo indie creators.  Eric Haven’s style follows the mold of stiff-limbed , wavy line drawing indie artists like, uh Sammy Harkham, who make surrealistically plotted stories that bring out all sortsa weird “i dunno” feelings for those who get off on reading such things.  (That’s me.)  I wish I had more of Haven’s stuff.  More than his contemporaries, he seems to focus less on expressing some existential something or other and instead loosely brings classic sci-fi or pulp themes into his work, but using it with the same style of oddly interconnected stories that we’ve seen in Harkahm’s Crickets or Jordan Crane’s Uptight.  I think there was only one Aviatrix, and it’s not enough to say what was going on and where it could’ve gone, hence the middle-of-the-road rating.

Still, if you see this, buy it.  It’ll probably be cheap, and it’ll give you something in your stack you can continually pick up and puzzle over.
