Completely valid: I’m only familiar with a couple of the characters featured in these collected one-shots, which feature various writers and artists showing us Where Are They Nows for some long lost Dreddverse characters, but to each story’s credit – as scripted by Mills, Grant and Rennie – while the tales have more resonance with awareness of the history, they’re absolutely entertaining / valuable without it.
Things range between humorous (Dredd’s once-maid Maria), to farcical (Walter the Wobot – drawn by Roger Langridge!) and even something more emotional (a Harlem Heroes flashback featuring Judge Giant), and are all equally excellently scripted and arted. Rufus Dayglo’s Bret Ewins’ impression sort of tires me nowadays, but his older work here looks great in black and white; some of the humor, unfortunately – as scripted by Rennie – feels surprisingly insensitive for the usually progressive mag and mars the experience slightly.
Overall, though, another great idea for the floppy of a focused set of strips to revisit.
