5 out of 5
It always seems a little weird reviewing bonus material or works-in-progress, as the nature of them (generally a peek behind the door of “done”) doesn’t really qualify by the standards we might expect of that movie or book we’ve paid to consume. Supposing that only those with an already instilled interest in the base material are pursuing the addendums, it seems logical to rate the work based on: Is this worth tracking down?
You know you love Voracious (though my opinion on the second volume wasn’t as glowing as the first, I still think this is wildly exciting and unique stuff), you know you’re hungry for the third series, and you know you’re slightly disappointed that it might not be available in print single issues like your other copies. So I’m sort of just siding with: Yes, This Is Worth Tracking Down just based on having another physical piece of Voraciousness, but also, it’s relatively cheap (or was – it’s now sold out on Jason Muhr’s shop, sorry…), and our creative duo – Markisan Naso and Jason Muhr – deserve whatever financial encouragement we can give ’em to stay in this comic game.
But also – the actual content is worth it! Bonus! You get a little over half of a regular book’s worth of pages from the upcoming Appetite for Destruction’s first issue, mostly in sequence – if you’ve read previews in which you’re given snippets from separate scenes, i.e. not in sequence, you know how annoying and unhelpful that can be – and in black and white, which is cool to see how much of the acting and emotion Muhr gets in his line work, and equally makes me appreciate how series colorist Andrei Tabacaru has had to be pretty careful to not sacrifice the existing detailing and shading. You also get some good pin-ups, a couple process pages from Muhr, some script pages from Appetite (of pages not in the comic part), and a lengthy interview that appeared on graphicpolicy in 2016, which is still pleasingly relevant discussing the series’ themes. This is a pretty robust for a preview book, innit?
Exactly. So worth it for various reasons, and worth a holy five star rating.
