Witty. Irreverent. Cute. Just like any other given webcomic in this vein…
Guilty as charged: I don’t read this online, and webcomics are as spur-of-the-moment subjective as any medium: You read X before Y and so you prefer X. Well, I have my small cache of online funnies, and some of them already fulfill the magical realism, slice-of-life sillies of Johnny Wander. That being said, this local comic shop day special issue is handsomely bound and printed on thick paper stock behind a cover – presumably by artist Yuko Ota – that’s a dead ringer for Brian Hurtt. Flipping through the contents, I tittered at the abrupt humor of a pony and cop team and a girl with a death-dealing skeleton hand. Alas, I seem to have cherry picked the best pages for my flipthrough, because the other various shorts collected here didn’t much break that titter barrier. But they’re witty, well drawn, and clever, and I can certainly see the appeal if you’re not getting your fix elsewhere.
So the rating is what it is, but mileage will absolutely vary.
