Super Gorillas vs. the All-American Victory Legion

3 out of 5

Paul Kupperberg’s brother, Alan, was commissioned by a fan to do some one-off updates of early publisher Centaur Comics’ All American Legion characters.  Two stories were completed and filed away; Paul Kupperberg, of Charlton Neo, spruced them up with Mort Todd, put them on their online Pix-c forum, and have now collected the stories in print.

Not being created as part of the Charlton Neo initiative itself, the tales are lacking a bit in the sharpness of some of those works, but certainly the spirit of the golden age fun remains the same.  Kupperberg’s art is a bit stiff and his dialogue troubling to say if his treatment of female avenger Blue Lady is clever era commentary or more short-sighted tee-hee-outdated-ideas-are funny, but on the whole, this is harmless stuff.

Story one has its ridiculous nazi gorilla premise, but the execution feels too widespread and cluttered to really lay into its cheekiness.  The second story mind-swap bit is fantastic fun, though, with much more solid execution and good yuks.
