Star Wars (#20) – Jason Aaron

3 out of 5

Another Obi-Wan diary entry, covering a skirmish between our narrator and Black Krrsantan and, if I were more of a Star Wars lore guy, maybe possibly explaining some world-building details.  But ideally the story can be enjoyed without that…

And it can.  Peter Mayhew’s photo-reference art is gorgeous, although a bit stiff with the action shots, as the style tends to be. And Aaron’s script deals with some generic considerations regarding the force and responsibility, but successfully avoids anything too sentimental.  But because the story is more of a snapshot of a moment versus a contemplative journal entry episode, the stakes are low: We know all of these characters survive, so how much “can I reach my light saber?” tension can there really be?

The diary entries remain an effective way to pause between arcs, and can remain entertaining even when they’re essentially not adding anything to the story.
