Birth. Movies. Death. Batman v Superman Commemorative Issue

4 out of 5

No worries – I didn’t see the movie yet either.  And yet… I bought this?  Well, if ya’ don’t know, now ya’ know: Birth.Movies.Death. is, until it gets taken over by Gawker or something, the current awesomest place for awesome movie stuff, with a great core of dedicated readers / commentors and universally well-spoken and well-idea-ed writers.  So I faithfully bought the mag, both wanting to contribute and eager to see what kind of stuff they would deliver.  But perhaps a first and foremost question is whether or not what you’re getting is original material…?  And it would seem that, while BMD has since posted the articles and editorials in this issue on their site, initially you were indeed getting exclusive stuff.  And besides – it’s good print quality, it was only 5 bucks (fine, plus shipping), and it’s easy way to house all of this related material instead of sifting through browser tabs.  Plus, if you’re actually reading this stuff, the articles are darned interesting, each and every one of them, thanks to – we’ll suppose – editor Devin Faraci’s pitch to make this more of a comprehensive Batman, Superman, comics-in-media history than a fluff piece for BvS.

However, there is a lot of content between the covers, which feels like it results in some wider topics getting shorted their full worth.  It’s a shame, because the seed of every article is sincerely worthwhile, but I suppose I would have ditched a few articles and expanded others to really make the mag shine.
