Björk – 5 Years (Alec Empire remix / recording – unreleased)

3 out of 5

Label: Unreleased?

Producer: Alec Empire

Totally not a worthwhile review, so don’t even read this yayyy.

You see, it’s stupid, because I’m not even rating a full track, but what seems to be a 2.5 minute snippet of an unreleased remix / recording session by Alec Empire for a track from Björk’s Homogenic.  And I’m doing it just for posterity, to note, to myself that I gave it a listen.  Okay?  Sha.

So I’ve never been a Björk fan, but I figured I should give a listen to the original version of this track to get an idea of what’s going on.  And y’know, I sort of dig the original.  It’s quirky and attitude-y and makes Björk’s half-passionate half-silly lyrics work with the vibe of the song.  It also makes what Empire was doing here very interesting, as his beatless, slowed down, washed out version of the song is – beyond the lyrics being the same – an ENTIRELY different track.  It’s haunting where the original is smirky, and really blends in some echoey sound scapes to exteeennnd Björk’s vocals into the ether, even though they must be playing at the same speed.

I’d say I prefer the original, but… uh, snippet.  And more interesting as a comparison point than as an actual listen, me suppose.
