Somewhere in the middle of all things Junk, 1953 has the distinction of coming up with some original hooks and song structures but somehow mashing it together in a way that blends the tracks into one. You’ll tune in for a moment and recognize it as Soul-Junk, then be surprised at some of the variations Glen Galaxy puts into the tracks, but then a little while later you’ll have tuned out. It feels more like a practice ground album, for some reason, trying out some tricks, not energetic enough vocally or thrash-wise to be something you think of listening to offhand, but the songs do wear into your memory, and you’ll tap your foot when they come on shuffle.
Bonus points for the extra album that is the last track.
