MOY – MegaWisdom

3 out of 5

Label: self-released

Produced by: Johanz Westerman

A year after the Error 502 EP on Batrachian, two of those tracks had their own white label release from MOY himself – apparently to give them their full sonic due on 45.

These are pretty glorious cuts, sharing an approach of a kind of smoothed-out acid beat the backs some exploratory synths; but the things that I tend to love about MOY – his percussion precision, and ability to subtly push tracks into some less expected emotional realms – are fairly minimized here. This is more about momentum than heading for any net new frontiers. The playfulness of the drums are always worth checking out on MOY tracks: his ear for when to add another layer, or when to play up the low-end; and, in general, these are just expertly produced tunes – very warm and inviting.

That said, because the aforementioned aspects are very slick in this outing, beyond noting that these are damn good acid tracks to chill out to, I doubt I’d be able to identify them as MOY without having known ahead of time, and whether or not I would’ve double-dipped on these tunes had I known I was doing that – the 45 went up for sale; MOY’s stuff sells quickly so I bought it – my ears aren’t quite up to the spec that demanded the glow-up from 33 RPMs to this format, though Johanz Westerman’s remaster absolutely adds a fair amount of depth to the overall sound.
