3 gibbles out of 5
Director: Gregory Poirier
Man, gibbling this movie reminds me of the inadequacy of any rating system. I’ve rated plenty of movies three gibbles that I would watch again way before I even recommended “Tomcats” to anyone. But: such is the way these things go. The gibbles represent a comparison more than a rating, namely, How does this compare to what you thought it’d be? And Tomcats is three gibbles, because it’s incredibly average.
While this came out during the rush of American Pie-type films, it thankfully carries more of a sex-comedy vibe than a gross-out film vibe. It plays pretty loose with its morals, and hides some pretty general homophobia and misogyny behind some VERY generic talk of love and relationships. But that’s also to be expected. Shannon Elizabeth was not annoying, and Jerry O’Connell balances his role well. Mr. Busey is typically nasty.
There were a couple surprising decisions in the film, as far as not taking things as far as you could expect, and taking other things in somewhat random directions, but overall this is way predictable fare. Worth some laughs here and there. Wait, did you like “Kuffs?” You’ll probably like this movie.
