4 out of 5
Director: Sean Ellis
This is an incredibly quiet film. I’d say this quality is what drew my respect the most, as it adds a lair of subtlety to the goings-ons that other films would easily have chosen to tarnish. This helps the plot as well, as, frankly, there’s not too much going on. The high rating on this one is more due to being able to hold my interest (dedicatedly – I did not want to turn away) without really showing all that much. Honestly, when the director decides to tip his hand in the gore direction, it seems out of place (for a better transition between quiet and gore, check out Eric Red’s 100 Feet), but it, at least, added to the unnerving feeling going on the film. Anyhow, the concept of the movie is pretty much as summarized – a woman sees a duplicate of herself and starts to track it down. How much you want to piece together the story is up to you, but I think this one is better if you just let the quiet work and let the story-telling do its thing. A better-than-average spooky movie, that would’ve been five stars with a bit more meat to it.
