Stephen King’s Cat’s Eye

2 out of 5

Director: Lewis Teague

Ah, this feels so dated. Cats Eye is a movie combining three tales which are pointlessly connected by a wandering cat. Its not horror, its not really a thriller, its just one of those 80s films that can pass 90 minutes and doesnt really cost too much of your brain. The first tale, which is by far the most entertaining, is about James Woods trying to quit smoking. He goes to a corporation to assist with this… A corporation which will stop at nothing to make sure he quits. The second tale concerns a Vegas heavy whos pretty young wife is cheating with Robert Hays. Vegas heavy kidnaps Hays and subjects him to some high-stakes gambling for the rights to the wife. The third tale is the one to bring out the kids for: Drew Barrymore takes in a stray cat which she claims protects her from monsters in her walls. The parents dont believe her but the monster is, of course, real, and though sort of frightening looking, it makes cute noises. Enjoyment of the film is either marred or bolstered by an oddly upbeat / heroic score whenever the cat is running around as well as this laughably strange psychic link between said cat and Barrymore that pops up between each story. While story one has a feeling of being thought out to some degree, story two and three are simplistic and too isolated to really matter.
