I’m okay with this movie. Its one of those grungy, post-apocalyptic type films with dirty sets Mad Maxish characters. We can forgive that its set in 2008, because maybe its not too far off from how 2008 was, I forget. Rutger Hauer is a crazy cop whose partner was killed by some insane-o with whom Hauer seems to share a psychic link. A few years later the same killer is back, and Hauer is paired with a straight-laced detective to track it down. …Did I say It? Yes, because its a creature, and not a person. Split Second is actually a lot of fun. It doesnt take itself too seriously, but also manages to slightly side-step a lot of the stereotypes of this genre. Its a tarnished world, but its populated by mostly regular people and not tons of leather-clad spike-haired freaks. Hauer and his partner bicker, but the partner is actually competent and not annoying. Theres a love interest, and some boobs, but they keep away from any love-making scenes and the female (Ms. Cattrall) ends up being more than just set dressing. Good effects, well shot and acted, and while it loses some steam in the last battle, the nature of the creature is a fun over-the-top twist that I wasnt expecting, and keeps you fueled through the end. Worth your 90 minutes.
