Smash Cut

Director: Lee Demarbre

Plain and simple: this is a love letter to Herschell Gordon Lewis in the same way that “House of the Devil” is a love letter to 80s horror. It’s not a good movie by any means, but that’s exactly the point. The acting hovers between spartan and melodramatic, the blood and gore is done for laughs and splatters and not for makeup impressiveness, and the story is just a pretty, senseless package in which to wrap this gift. But none of these things are meant to be slanderous: they are all to the benefit of the movie. From the grainy, opening titles to the zany acting and casting of a porn star, this is grindhouse entertainment from the first shot, and never goes for being overly clever when it can just go for fun. Most horror fans should be able to get behind this movie, either as harmless entertainment to watch with a group, or respecting it as a dedicated tribute to an influential corner of the horror world.
