Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

5 out of 5

Director: Steven Soderbergh

I almost hate that this movie is so flawless. The quirkiness and over-abundance of stars and throw in romantic subplot should make it all flash, but it turns out that the flash is completely what makes the movie so entertaining. Oceans 11 is a heist film of epic proportions. While its probably ridiculous, the way it breaks down how these 11 criminals (led by Pitt and Clooney) get together and plan to rob three massive Vegas casinos in one night makes it so believable within the hip world this movie inhabits, its a thrill to watch every time. Soderbergh, in my mind, perfected this shooting style, the harmony of panache and music and smart yet quirky camera work. While his ouevre is sometimes interesting but not satisfying, here he cranks his game up to (ha ha) 11, and because everyone involved in the film seems to be having such a great time, its hard not to feel the same when watching it. Nearly flawless. If you are harboring any grudges against this movie for being too cool, get over it and see it now.
