Marriage of Maria Braun

5 out of 5

Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder

Speaking to the power of film, I do not feel that a review can truly do this movie justice. The Marriage of Maria Braun follows the titular main character from her marriage – after which hubby is immediately shipped off to war – through hearing of her husbands death, and the exploits she undertakes during and after. All the while she admittedly holds on to the dedication and love for her husband, causing compelling reactions from the lovers she takes. If it sounds a little lovey-dovey, it aint. And that was only part of what was so capturing about this movie. It keeps moving along (much like the lead character) where others would have stumbled and dwelled upon sadness or loss. The frankness with which all is presented is admirable, and translates into every aspect of the film. The opening and ending are cold, with titles stitched over massive events. And while key points to the narrative are withheld for dramatic purposes, there is a very natural flow to things as the viewer discovers that something major happens and we werent privy to view it. Combined with the naturalistic colors and all-encompassing camera (steady, yet swooping around scenes), its hard to not get wrapped up in Maria Braun, as her several suitors do as well. Hanna Schygulla is amazing in the lead. This was and is a bold film that dances on the themes of relationships and the results of our actions, but doesnt allow one to sit with any easy resolutions. Recommended if you like films that wont sit easily in your brain.
