Black Sheep

Director: Jonathan King

Do you like horror? Do you find sheep inherently funny? Then theres pretty much no way you can go wrong with this film. Black Sheep does so, so many things right, and has some truly hilarious scenes that would make the movie even if the rest were trash. Falling into the Evil Dead / Dead Alive class of horror overkill for laughs Black Sheep establishes its afraid-of-sheep protagonist and hippie female lead with skill, giving you obvious plot points without making you tap your toe in impatience for gore. This is a big success of the movie in general: it is wholly entertaining. Even though each character plays a familiar trope, they are each given enough personality to not be eye-rolling or wasted. And the little bits and pieces that lead to the sheep-on-human gore are equally entertaining. The only thing that prevents it from being mind-blowing is that… its too friendly. Horror sort of has to abuse its players and yes, people get bloodily devoured in this film and maybe theres a pit of sheep offal in which two people fall but it never really gets to that ew… or eye-opening factor that the stars of this genre do. BUT – its still an awesome amount of fun, and a welcome addition to the non-hollywood, non-CGI-laced (the transformation scenes are done very well… and that sheep fetus is hilarious) horror films.
