Director: David Twohy
Though I’m sure this has already been said, A Perfect Getaway is just that – A perfect, hour and a halfish getaway. Its not the kind of thing youd want to watch every day, lest it lose its charm, and on reflection, perhaps everything isnt so perfect… but overall? You feel pretty refreshed afterward. The plot is pretty straight forward – a couple on vacation learns that the travelers they picked up along the way might be killers – but, as is often the case with film, the success of the story lies in the presentation. Director/writer David Twohy has done some interesting work in the movie biz, writing more movies than youd expect (The Fugitive?) and directing some earnest sci-fi / horror (The Arrival). Here his skills are amped up a notch, with many of the plotting and shooting tricks of his previous experiences mixed together for a fun bag of wordplay, acting, and action. For there is a great mix in the film – while the explanation scenes stumble slightly, characters speak realistically in the movie, Milla playing a convincing blend of emotions, Zahn a great and fair representation of your average husband, and Olyphant totally shining as the sort-of crazy backpacker. And when it plays out to the more adrenalized moments, its handled excitingly and without lame shaky-cam. Anyhow, the three stars is because its all for entertainment and not much else, as the revelation about whats going on is… well… It aint perfect. But was it fun to watch? Yup.
