Mass Hysteria – It Aint Safe / Fall Out 12″

3 out of 5

Label: Rhymesayers

Produced by: Dug Infinite (It Ain’t Safe), SC (Fall Out)

An okay pair of singles from Mass Hysteria’s ‘The Unexpected’ mixtape, neither side is especially worth tearin’ down the house, but they both also show promise.

It Ain’t Safe is mostly a typical boast track, solidly mixed and produced and with a good flow. Verbalists Gee Field and Mike Treece spar well, one with more of a nasal spit and one with more rhythmic patter, and it’s a quality partnership in which neither outshines or oversteps the other. Definitely a track that gets your head bobbing, and the repeated chorus (and the way it intertwines with samples) is catchy enough to get stuck in your head.

Fall Out brings in another emcee, J.U.I.C.E., and something about that dynamic suddenly renders the vocal range pretty flat. Still smooth flow, just nothing sticks out lyrically or tonally. The production is still good, though, and this is where having the instrumental is a benefit: listening to the music alone, there’s a lot of cool stuff going on – fades and effects over the beat – and once you hear that, it enhances the track when listening to it again with lyrics.

Both sides feature clean and dirty versions and instrumentals.
