The solid but average Timers is backed up by the extended, comparatively complex The One Around for Years
Latter-day Love as Laughter came in as driblets – singles, EPs – and maybe as a result didn’t seem to have a very set feel. The A-side title track is of that somewhat edgeless mold: it’s straight ahead rock, with Sam Jayne’s passionate vocals carrying us through a catchy, paced riff. Again, solid, but somewhat unvarying.
The B-side, though, is where some extra magic comes in – the loose, inventive, toe-tapping layering of a Laughter’s Fifth track, married to an indie rock bit of build and release that looks back to something like Lync… Whereas most LAL of this time just kind of made me wish for a full album, this is a track that stands on its own.
