Wolfmother – Dimensions (EP)

3 out of 5

Label: Modular

Produced by: Dave Sardy

Let’s just be honest about what this is: It’s a single, for the less-than-three-minute instrumental psychedelica The Earth’s Rotation Around the Sun, which is a filler track at best.  It also has some music videos.

Elsewhere are tracks you already own from the group’s blockbuster debut self-titled album – Dimension, Mind’s Eye, and Love Train – although we’ll allow for some credit as that last one was only on the international releases.  Are these good songs?  Absolutely.  They are highlights of the 70s-nabbing metal intensity which producer Sardy rocked into an ear-shredding modern stomp, and give a good summary of Wolf’s Zepp-y prog-y tendencies, as well as their willingness to dip into the same era of funk-influenced rock via Love Train.  With years passed, it becomes apparent how much of this is centered around lead Andrew Stockdale (the drums and bass feel rather perfunctory, though they sound good), and in that sense, having the group boiled down to highlights may encourage one to brush off the impact their album(s) can hold, but that’s maybe a better discussion for review of those albums.

Anyhow.  It is what it is.  Not bad, but, y’know, one song.
