“Traditional English music” by way of Portland, Oregon. Yeah, you get it.
Sloppy, lo-fi rawk sung with Bri’ish accents affected all over fantastic lyrics like “shank ’em in the nuts,” from the classic “shank em.” …But do I also hear “shank ’em in the wi-fi?” I don’t know. The point is, there’s stupid joke rock, and then there’s the abandon that gives way to enjoyable trashy joke rock, and The Gutters embrace the latter, thank yorp. It does help that the slabs of Sex Pistols slop are appropriately less than two minutes riff-and-stomp sing-alongs, but adding value above and beyond the chuckle-listen call are the two “real” songs dropped in slots 3 and 4: “We Will Win” and “Pinochet.” The former is emotive, and actually latches on to that lower-classes-will-rise vibe in an inspiringly fist-pumping manner, and the latter has an appreciable slow-burn patience to it (for 2:30, anyway).
Doesn’t make this the most epic or grabbing EP of all time ever, but The Gutters would definitely have your attention at a bar, and there’s enough juice in these ten minutes to get a chorus or two stuck in your head for a bit.
