Shakuhachi Surprise ‎– Space Streakings Sighted Over Mount Shasta

3 out of 5

Produced by: Steve Albini

Label: Skin Graft

Yeah, sure, why not?  Video game noise pummelers Space Streakings and crunchy rocksters Mount Shasta unite under an Albini banner for some anti-music fun.  Things kick off with the cut-and-paste test of patience, Swavay; if you find yourself grinning at the madness, you’ll be fine thereafter.

Space Streakings sort of takes the lead at first pilfering, Shasta’s chugga chugga with bleeps and bloops, but later in the (short) disc, some actual guitar grooves make an appearance, resulting in some, y’know, songs.  Who steps forward on the vocal front, you may ask?  With lead singers apparently trying their hand at the other’s primary language, it doesn’t really matter: most of this comes across as shouted gobbledy gook, mixed in as another layer of calamity.

The “supergroup” wisely keeps the experiment short, which allows it to maintain a bouncy sense of fun through its mad blitz attack, though, no, there’s no singles in here that will have you jumping up to hit repeat.
