Resurrection – I Am Not: The Discography

3 out of 5

Label: Deathwish

Produced by: Kurt Ballou (mixed by)

While not necessarily revolutionary, early 90s teen-staffed hardcore group is damned passionate; as the brief liner notes state – this was a gathering of the disaffected, shouting about whatever was on their minds.  They came, did their thing effectively, making their mark, then went their ways to separate bands, and Deathwish has done us the favor of recaputring this flash of fury on a single album, comprising their lone release, single, EP, and some comp / live cuts.

Notes of various hardcore acts are apparent in Resurrection’s output, from the punky early Snapcase attack to, more prevalent, the looming Converge shadow of Boston metal.  But to the group’s credit, while their sound may not particularly be distinctive, it’s not an outright copy, and some noteworthy compositions – breaking from the chugga chugga mold to include some timing breakdowns – emerge, particularly on longer tracks like Culture (which may be better in a rawer form on the EP included here) or Bleed.  Lyrically we bounce between vague hysterics and social finger pointing, but it never descends into blind Fuck Offs, generally structuring things into an opinion relative to the song.

Recording quality varies, but in general the mix is powerful, and though the live cuts are fuzzy, you get the feeling this would’ve been a pretty impressive act to see.

Not a disc to run out and grab, but an interesting stepping stone for its youthy participants, and if you were there when this stuff happened, a comp that will bring back some time-hasn’t-tarnished-’em memories.
