Label: Hydra Head
Producer: Steve Albini (Neurosis), Keith Falgout, Soilent Green (Soilent Green)
So close. Still, it’s a pretty great way to close out this series, with two classic bands delivering solid renditions that are both for sure covers and yet for sure unmistakably Neurosis / Soilent Green.
On the Neurosis side, with ‘Children of the Grave,’ Albini gives us a wonderful echo for group vocals (or shouts) and a pummeling beat. The riffs are pure Sabbath, but the energy and attack are all provided by Neurosis, even years ago (now) proving capable of presenting a synchronized threatening front that drips skill without being flashy. We circle around the chorus enough times to keep us excited without droning on. Soilent Green starts things out awesomely for Lord of the Southern Priest; a good pairing for Neurosis, perhaps a bit more traditional in their hardcore sound but still sounding fresh and energized, jumping right in to ripping guitars and drum rolls that transform classic metal into something that much heavier. Where the Neurosis side keeps you on your toes, though, Soilent’s contribution feels a bit more repetitive, even leading to a fade out. Still its a solid track,
The artwork on this one is a bit murky (dim gray text on black) but good design in concept. The highlight is the gorgeous brown marbled vinyl.
A good collectors’ item that’s actually worth listening to.
