Tucker B’s – 29 Serious Girlfriends

4 out of 5

Label: Grimsey

Producer: Tucker B’s?

Wowser, what a blast of folky rock.  This little EP gets docked a star only because it’s too pleasant to really stick in your head, and if that’s a stupid reason, then I’ll back it up by saying that the band seems to further wish to purposefully erase your memories of the pleasantries by including a pretty abrasive noise / instrumental track at the end, which is interesting in its own right but is just long enough and filled with just the right pitch of listenable scratches and screeches to make you forget what song it was you were listening to a few minutes ago…  I almost always have to turn my player down for this track, and it makes me hesitate hitting play again.  It’s weird.

But PRIOR to that, we get some totes smooth folk jams, just perfect little jangly gems, wonderful vocals that are like a more weighty Kingsbury Manx, wandering jams that are like Ticonderoga except less sad.  Man, it’s just pretty delicious.  And then there’s the massive blast of duffin’ rock that slams into your ears toward the end of the EP… like this is a straight-out slab of electric beef, no playing it down because we’re a folky band…  Whoosh.  Awesome.  I really want to get my hands on more Tucker Bs stuff, and hopefully it casts some light on that experimental last track, and how it fits in with the band’s overall vibe.  This is secretly 5 out of 5.  Don’t ask.
