Some minor alt-rock entertainment for free.
Kleinfelter would soon morph into Lying in States, which happens to be the name of the second song on this EP and one of its best. The name probably doesn’t add any further reference, though they recorded for Flameshovel records, who did due diligence in finding some valid also-rans in the indie rock scene, the kind of groups to which you can bond if you come by them naturally – at a show, or a dollar bin purchase – but that you understand dont quite have the star power to turn a million ears. And Kleinfelter are very evidently part of that sound lineage. Opening song Coroners Cut Corners swells with some grungy riffage before getting into some Unwound-esque stop/start intensity on their namesake track. The instrumental Vie Capitol Punk carves out some fun, more upbeat territory, but the general guitar attack of the latter half sort of rounds the experience to a indistinct sounding one, unemboldened by the spoken-sung middle layer vocals, reminiscent of the drone-ish speak of atombombpocketknife.
But here’s the thing: You can download this for FREE. And that it has enough impact to grab your ear for at least its first few songs means that, monetary wise, must be worth your time.
