Following quickly on the heels of his debut comes the mini-album Tttrial and Eror, which finds Mr. Sascha Ring AKA Apparat loosening up a bit from the controlled minimalism of Multifunktion. After First Try misleads us into thinking we’ll be listening to more glitchy bleeps culled from the same limited cache of tricks as before, Dance-floory beats sneak in on First Eror, though Ring still struggles with expanding his palate beyond an initial build up. Eror gives it a go by switching gears towards its conclusion, but it’s not radical enough to seem like a game changer; Pressure and Bugs And Fixes introduce some interesting new elements – a smooth horn on Pressure – but hold at about that same level. The dam breaks on Nato, though, as Ring slips over into Aphex territory with cut-up like sounds and a more wandering structure, and keeps the elevated vibe going for ABS. It’s all over as soon as it begins, unfortunately – Tttrial is basically an EP – but unlike the almost dismissive ending of Multifunktion, Ring almost seems pissed to wrap thing up here, with the suddenly discordant static of Shutdown – which just pricks up my ears to want to go through the disc again.
